The project is built around a contradiction: each of us watches the weather every day, but professional meteorology is organised quite differently. Between the everyday and the scientific gaze on the world lies the very “gap” the artists investigate. Sound, light and text function here as instruments that record not temperature and pressure, but our attempts to understand something.
“Influence Gap” is an artistic project devoted to the history and philosophy of knowledge about the Earth. Much attention is given to the nature of scientific knowledge, but the centre is occupied by reflections on the act of observation itself. On closer inspection it turns out, first, that by observing the world we change it, and second, that anyone can observe. The proof is our everyday observation of the weather.
Weather, the world around us and our judgements about it become the subject of observation — both real and imagined. Real objects, attributes of museum design, measuring instruments, music and texts mingle to create a world in which something happens and does not happen at the same time, in which physical time is displaced by fantastical time, and the combination of the scientific, the everyday, the quasi-scientific and the entirely invented opens the doors of perception and imagination. So the artists invite the viewer into a one-of-a-kind world — the world of their childhood dream.
